It was recently mused on MacAddict's webpage that with MacOS 8.5's Folder Action Scripts, a script could be written that would close a folder as soon as it was opened. Just to see how easy it would be to do, here it is. This is useless, really, and quite an obvious prank that wouldn't last too long when confronted by an experienced Mac user.
The only addition to version 2.0 is that a dialog window pops up now where you can insert a message. The message should hopefully remove any curiousity about why the window just snapped shut. You're welcome to change this message to suit your purposes.
Where does this script go?
Put this script in the Folder Action Scripts Folder, inside the Scripts folder, in the System Folder.
How do I turn it on?
1) Control click the folder you wish to apply this script to, and scroll down the contextual menu to Attach A Folder Action.
2) Navigate your way to the Folder Action Scripts Folder, inside the Scripts folder, in the System Folder.
3) Select the Open - Close Folder script.
How do I turn it off?
1) Control click the folder you wish to remove this script from, and scroll down the contextual menu to Remove A Folder Action.
2) Select Open - Close Folder script to turn it off.
How can I tell a Folder Action Script is running?
There are two obvious ways:
1) Control click the folder you wish to check for running scripts, and if Remove A Folder Action is listed in the contextual menu, then one or more scripts are running on that folder.
2) A small script icon will appear in the lower left corner, regardless of whether the folder has a custom icon.
Where can I find out more about Folder Action Scripts?
Open up the MacOS Help (Command-?) and search on Folder Action Scripts. The MacOS 8.5 Easy Install automatically includes lots of samples far more useful than this.
